It goes further than a quick screen. The clinician may examine the person, go through their medical history and medications, find out what support the caregiver can give, draw up a care plan, help with an advance care plan, and refer to specialists or community resources such as adult day programs and support groups.
After the Part B deductible, the person pays 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount. A family can ask for it by name; many do not know it exists.
Why it matters
It turns a vague worry about memory into a documented assessment and a plan, and Medicare pays most of it.
