The person is given three words, asked to draw a clock face showing a set time, then asked to recall the words. It is quick enough to use in an ordinary appointment and needs no special equipment.
Like any screening test it does not diagnose dementia. A low score is a reason for a fuller assessment, not a conclusion.
Why it matters
It is one of the tests a family is most likely to see in a primary care visit, often before anyone has used the word dementia.
