What is Neuropsychological testing?

Neuropsychological testing is a structured set of tasks, given by a psychologist, that measures memory, attention, language, reasoning and other thinking skills in detail.

It takes several hours and produces a profile of strengths and weaknesses that helps distinguish types of dementia, and dementia from depression or normal ageing. Repeating it a year later shows the direction of change.

It is usually ordered by a memory clinic or neurologist.

Why it matters

It is the most precise tool for answering whether something is really wrong, and what kind of wrong.
