Diagnosis and assessment

What is Cognitive screening tests?

Cognitive screening tests are short standardised questionnaires, such as the MMSE or MoCA, that give a rough score of thinking ability in about ten minutes.

They ask the person to recall words, copy a shape, name the date, and follow instructions. A score suggests whether fuller assessment is needed; it does not diagnose anything on its own.

Education, language and anxiety all affect scores, which is why a single low score is a reason to look further rather than a conclusion.

Why it matters

This is usually the first test a family encounters, and it is a screen, not a diagnosis.
