Safety at home

What is Fall prevention?

Fall prevention is the set of measures that reduce a person's risk of falling: exercise, medication review, vision checks, lighting, footwear and home changes.

People with dementia fall at roughly twice the rate of other older adults, and a hip fracture often ends independent living. Many falls have several small causes at once.

The CDC's STEADI programme gives clinicians a structured way to assess and reduce risk.

Why it matters

One fall frequently starts the sequence that ends in a nursing home, and much of the risk is removable.
