Symptoms and behaviour

What is Disinhibition?

Disinhibition is a loss of social restraint: saying blunt or offensive things, undressing in public, or spending money impulsively.

It is most characteristic of frontotemporal dementia, where the parts of the brain governing social judgement are affected first, but it occurs in other dementias later on.

It is not a change in the person's values. It is the loss of the brake.

Why it matters

Families often feel shame about this one; knowing it is a brain change, not character, is the beginning of coping with it.
