The general program offers skills training, mobile support and one-to-one support, through a Caregiver Support Team at every VA facility. The Caregiver Support Line is 1-855-260-3274, Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm Eastern.
The comprehensive program has strict criteria. Among them, the veteran must have a VA disability rating of 70 percent or higher and need at least six months of continuous, in-person personal care. Eligible primary family caregivers may receive a monthly stipend.
Why it matters
If the person with dementia is a veteran, the family caregiver may be entitled to support that nobody has mentioned.
