What does a Care Compare star rating tell you, and what does it not?

A Care Compare star rating is a published quality rating for the agency as a whole, and it does not say whether the agency has experience with dementia. An agency with 4 stars may or may not have staff who regularly care for people with memory loss, and a lower or missing rating does not answer that question either. Use the rating as one input, then ask the dementia-specific questions below.

Home health agencies and non-medical home care are also different things. Medicare's home health services coverage page explains what Medicare covers for home health. Day-to-day help such as companionship, meals and supervision is a separate need, and you can read about companion care and personal care on our site.

What questions should you ask about dementia-specific training?

Ask every agency, in plain words, what dementia training its caregivers have received, who provided it, and how recently. The CDC describes dementia as a condition affecting memory, thinking and daily function, so the questions should test how the agency responds to those changes. These are general questions to put to any agency or caregiver:

  • What dementia-specific training do your caregivers complete, and how is it documented?
  • How do you handle repeated questions, confusion, agitation or refusal of help?
  • Will the same caregiver visit regularly, or will it rotate?
  • What background checks, reference checks and licensing do you carry out and can you show the paperwork?
  • Who do I call if a caregiver cannot come, and how fast is a replacement arranged?
  • How do you update the family when behaviour or health changes?
  • What is the plan if a visit shows a safety concern, such as wandering or a fall?

Write down the answers and compare them across agencies. A clear, specific answer is more useful than a general promise.

How does our service help you choose a caregiver?

We send caregivers screened for dementia care experience, and you receive 3 to 5 video profiles within 48 hours. You watch each caregiver's video interview before deciding whom to meet. The video interview is the proof: you see how the person speaks and responds before anyone comes to your home.

Which option fits depends on how much help is needed. Some families start with a few hours a week of memory care at home, give a primary caregiver a break with respite care, or arrange hospital discharge care after a stay. Research on Medicare claims has looked at dementia and 30-day hospital readmission risk, which is a reason to plan the first weeks at home carefully.

Where else can Naples families find dementia support?

Local Alzheimer's Association chapters are a good place to ask about support groups and local resources for Alzheimer's disease specifically. Florida has chapters such as the Florida Gulf Coast chapter and the Southeast Florida chapter. Check which one covers your address before you call.

For money questions, the NIA explains how people pay for long-term care and what long-term care is. Veterans may want to read the VA page on Aid and Attendance and the Housebound Allowance. Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care program page is a starting point for Medicaid questions. Limits and eligibility rules are set by Florida's Medicaid rules, so confirm current figures with the office that administers the program.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many home health agencies does Medicare list for Naples?

Medicare Care Compare lists 14 home health agencies for Naples. This page shows eight of them, so it is not the full list.

Which Naples agency has the highest Care Compare rating on this page?

Three agencies shown here carry a 4 out of 5 rating: Naples Home Health Care, Inc, Loving Care Home Health Agency, Inc, and Friendly Home Health Care Corp. Check each record for the current rating, and remember it is not a measure of dementia experience.

What should I ask an agency about background checks and licensing?

Ask what checks it runs on caregivers, what licenses it holds, and whether it can show documentation. This is general guidance for any agency. We do not claim these checks for our own caregivers.

How does your service differ from a home health agency?

We help you choose a caregiver. Our caregivers are screened for dementia care experience, you get 3 to 5 video profiles within 48 hours, and you watch each caregiver's video interview before deciding whom to meet.

Where can I check an agency's details myself?

Open the Medicare Care Compare record linked in the table, or call the agency using the phone number shown there. Confirm the address and rating before you visit or sign anything.
