What does a Care Compare star rating tell you?

A star rating is one published quality measure for an agency, and it is not a guarantee about any single caregiver or visit. A 5-star agency can still be a poor fit for a person with dementia, and an agency with fewer stars or no rating may suit your family's needs. Use the rating alongside the conversations you have with the agency.

The Care Compare records are for home health agencies. Medicare describes what it covers for home health on its home health services coverage page. Check that page, or ask the agency directly, about whether your situation qualifies, because coverage rules are separate from star ratings.

Why does dementia change what you should ask an agency?

Dementia affects memory, thinking and the ability to manage daily activities, so a home care agency needs to show it understands these changes. The CDC describes dementia as affecting memory, thinking and daily function.

A star rating does not say how an agency handles someone who becomes confused, resists help with bathing, or wanders. That is why the questions in the next section matter.

What should you ask about dementia training?

Ask every agency to explain, in plain terms, what dementia-specific training its caregivers have received and who provided it. These questions are general guidance for any agency or caregiver, not claims about the agencies listed above:

  • What dementia training do your caregivers complete, how many hours, and how often is it refreshed?
  • Can you share how a caregiver would respond if my relative becomes agitated, refuses care, or does not recognise them?
  • Will the same caregiver or a small team visit, so my relative sees familiar faces?
  • What background checks and reference checks do you run, and can you describe the process?
  • What licences does the agency hold, and are caregivers licensed or certified for the tasks they will do?
  • Who supervises caregivers, and who do I call if a visit is missed or something goes wrong?
  • What happens if my relative's needs increase and they need more hours, or overnight help?
  • How do you communicate with family about changes in mood, eating, sleep or safety?

Write down the answers and compare them across agencies. A clear, specific answer is a better sign than a general reassurance.

How is our approach different from a home health agency?

We help families choose a caregiver by letting them see each person first. Our caregivers are screened for dementia care experience, and we send 3 to 5 video profiles within 48 hours. Families watch each caregiver's video interview before deciding whom to meet, and that video interview is the proof of fit, so you judge the person yourself rather than relying on a summary.

Learn more about in-home dementia care in Miami, or read about memory care at home. If a hospital stay is involved, see our page on hospital discharge care. If the main caregiver needs a break, respite care is another option.

Where else can Miami families look for dementia support?

The Alzheimer's Association has a South Florida chapter, and its chapter website is a place to ask about local programmes and support for families affected by Alzheimer's disease. Contact them through the website to find out what is currently offered.

For a general explanation of the types of long-term care and how people pay for them, the National Institute on Aging has an overview, What Is Long-Term Care?. Your doctor or the person's care team can advise on medical questions, and this page does not offer diagnosis or treatment advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these all the home health agencies in Miami?

No. Medicare Care Compare lists 20 for Miami, and this page shows eight of them. Check Care Compare itself for the full list and the latest ratings.

Which Miami agency has the highest star rating on this page?

Among the eight shown, ASA HOME CARE INC has the highest published rating, 5 out of 5, according to its Care Compare record. No phone number is listed for it there. A high rating does not tell you whether the agency suits someone with dementia, so still ask the training questions above.

How do I find out if an agency's caregivers have dementia training?

Ask the agency to describe the training, who delivered it, the number of hours, and how often it is refreshed. Ask the same of any individual caregiver you consider hiring. Request answers in writing if possible.

Should I ask about background checks and licensing?

Yes. Ask any agency or caregiver what background and reference checks are done, what licences the agency holds, and what credentials apply to the tasks involved. Do not assume; ask for specifics.

Does Medicare cover home health care?

Medicare has a page describing its home health services coverage, which you can read on Medicare's website. Eligibility depends on your situation, so confirm with Medicare or the agency before you rely on coverage.
